Poodles are a joy to own! Many people are of the opinion that owning a
poodle is difficult because of the coat care involved. Yes, it is at
times difficult; but, I find the charm of a poodle coat is that you are
able to sculpt "different," dogs out of the same dog. You are able to
form and change the coat exactly as you like and the poodle's coat always
grows, very fast!

Sporting the "terrier," look, if you let the coat grow out, they look a
little more like a teddy bear: you choose after your own taste.
The most important thing when choosing a poodle is that you contemplate
whether or not you have the time and energy to take care of their coat.
Remember that all breeds have
good and bad things related to their coats; some shed, others have very
thick coats that are difficult to keep fresh and others need to be trimmed
- all depending on the breed. Also, it's important to remember to include
the cost in your calculations of buying a dog - whether it is poodle or
another breed.

Most breeders send home a pamphlet with the puppy-buyers as to how the
coats should be maintained. Your local poodle club also holds courses in
how to clip both everyday and for shows. After a while you will find the
look and care that is just right for you and your dog. You might keep
more coat in the winter and take it off for the summer.
It is important
that you invest in good tools that will help you do a good job: if you
spend a little more on these tools, your job will be much easier in the
long run.
It is also important to teach your dog to be on the trim
board. Begin early while the dog is still a puppy, this will help the dog
be comfortable on the table and help you to be able to take care of it's
coat on the board instead of having to do it on the floor. This is also
excellent when you visit your veterinarian, since at some time the vet
will usually require that your dog is on an examining table.

A book that I recommend that you read is Trimma & Klipp by Carina Rohm who
is a dog trimmer with 30 years experience. She has a lot of practical
advice as well as many excellent photos by photographer Lillemor Böös.
Our Smilla is in one of these photographs! The publisher is ICA förlaget
and it can be found in most bookstores. You can also order from me:
